CHIEF OF CLAN HAYThe Chief of Clan Hay is Earl (recently Countess) of Erroll, and also High Constable, (heriditary) who enjoys precedence over all other holders of hereditary titles of Scotland, outside of the Royal Family. The family has held the honor since the time of King Robert Bruce. The chiefs of Hay are of Anglo-norman descent, and stem from William De La Haye, who received the barony of Erroll in 1178. The name comes from La Haye in Normandy, meaning "stockade of hedge" and the gaelic name of the chiefs (Mac Garaidh Mor) is rather an unusual translation of this term. According to tradition the Hays played a leading part in a victory against Danish invaders. This story commemorated the Hay heraldic device, related that as a reward for the victory a falcon led the way to Erroll and outlined the boundaries of the barony in flight before alighting on the falcon stone, now at Bowness, near port Erroll.
